Gossip benches, also called telephone tables, became popular shortly after the telephone was invented in 1876. They were most popular between the 1930s and the 1950s, but there is no specific date of invention for this piece of furniture due to the nature of its development: over time as a result of convenience and necessity.
The gossip bench began as a shelf for the telephone (then a very large and cumbersome non-portable object) to rest upon, usually in the hallway of the home. Naturally, telephone users began using regular chairs to sit on while using the telephone. It was only a matter of time until the two (shelf and chair) were combined into one stylish piece of furniture by opportunistic furniture craftsmen everywhere. A lamp and the telephone would typically be placed on the table top of the gossip bench, while a telephone directory would be stored in the drawer underneath.
This bench has been totally refurbished and updated. It features a newly upholstered and cushioned seat whose colors coordinate perfectly with the Palmetto Green chalk paint by Dixie Belle. The Golden Yellow accents on the back and leg tips are by Folk Art One Decor Paint.
This stylish piece would make a great accent piece in your home.
